Burping the baby thoroughly will reduce the amount of air in the stomach so that it does not pass on to the intestinal tract. Unfortunately, burping is not 100% effective at eliminating gas, since it has no effect on the gas created in the intestines during normal digestion. There are various physical therapies to relieve gas such as baby massage which may prove somewhat effective in helping baby to release gas. Simply applying light pressure on the tummy can soothe and help. You can also try carrying baby in the “football hold” – face down on your forearm with baby’s legs straddling your elbow and baby’s chin resting in your hand. The gentle pressure placed on the little tummy can help soothe and release baby’s wind.
If this does not work, there are several treatments available for infant wind. As always, you should consult your pediatrician first before giving baby any medications, remedies or supplements.
Simethicone is sold under several brand names in pharmacies. Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent that works by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach, helping them combine into larger bubbles that can be more easily expelled through burping. However, if these larger gas bubbles are not burped up quickly, they may move into the lower digestive tract, potentially leading to bloating and discomfort.
Simethicone is only effective in the stomach and upper part of the digestive system. It does not affect intestinal gas, which is often the cause of more intense pain. Since simethicone works by acting on gas bubbles in the stomach, it must be present where the gas is forming to be effective.
Simethicone is typically not used on an "as-needed" basis for gas that has already formed but rather given regularly, often with meals, to help prevent gas buildup. Simethicone will not help with gas that is already present in the intestines and may not be effective for gas-related discomfort not linked to feeding.
Sodium Bicarbonate (aka Baking Soda) is used in several gripe water brands that are sold as dietary supplements. Be cautious when using products containing sodium bicarbonate for infants. Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali that neutralizes the pH of stomach acid, which can temporarily relieve some discomfort caused by acid reflux. However, it can be absorbed into the bloodstream and, in larger amounts or with frequent use, may lead to unwanted side effects. For this reason, sodium bicarbonate is not recommended for children under the age of five, as noted on baking soda packaging. Even for adults, it should not be used for more than 2 weeks or for recurring conditions without consulting a healthcare professional. Some doctors also warn that sodium bicarbonate may disrupt the body’s electrolyte balance in infants, which could lead to serious health concerns.
Essential oils (such as dill, fennel, etc.) are used by some gripe water brands and sold as dietary supplements. Be cautious when using products containing essential oils, especially for infants. Many experts advise against the internal use of essential oils, particularly for babies, due to potential safety concerns. Essential oils are highly concentrated, and even in small amounts, they can cause side effects. Always consult with a healthcare provider before giving any product containing essential oils to your baby.
